Little Princess

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there lived a little princess. The princess was very lonely, because she was not allowed to play with the other children in town. Her parents thought it would be unwise, because surely the other children would spoil their perfect little daughter by playing in the mud and stealing apples. What they could not see was that their decision made the little princess very sad. They provided the princess with toys that could talk, toys that could move and toys that could sing, but nothing could cheer up the princess. The King and Queen were slightly annoyed, but they didn’t take much notice until one day, when the princess was gone…

The little princess had become awfully bored with her parents’ attempts at cheering her up, and therefore she snuck out of the castle in the middle of the night. But, because it was so dark, the little princess could not see where she was going, and she ended up in the big, dark forest behind the castle instead of the town where she originally intended to go. She wandered for a long time, her hair getting caught in branches, her dress getting torn by bushes, and the little princess becoming more and more scared.

She sat down against a large, warm tree branch and was about to cry when she got the fright of her life. The branch she was leaning against suddenly opened a big, yellow eye. The princess was so dumbfounded that she forgot to cry altogether. The branch stretched and yawned, and then a scaly face turned to look at the princess. She had discovered a dragon!

The dragon looked at her for a moment, and then it gave a startling cry. The princess jumped back, scared. She needn’t be scared for long though, because she could see three baby dragons flying towards her from the deep forest. The mother dragon had called her three babies for the princess to play with!

The princess and the dragons played for some time, but suddenly they heard the noise of men in armour and the cry of the mother dragon. The princess and the baby dragons set off at once, to see what the commotion was about. When they found the mother dragon, men from the castle were threatening to kill the mother dragon on orders from the little princess’ father. The princess cried out in horror. When the King saw his daughter, his face lit up and he ordered his knights to stop. He ran fourth and embraced his little girl, happy to find her alive and well.

From that day on, the little princess has continued to play with the baby dragons, and she has also been allowed into the city, because no-one can go through a childhood without any friends.
